Scientific research on great blue hole shows that the formation of the hole takes a long period of  153000, 66000, 60000 and 15000 thousand years ago. The hole was gradually created due to the phenomena of quaternary glaciation as the sea level were much lower. When the sea level rises, the caves were filled with sea water.
The species found in the holes were reef shark, Caribbean reef shark, giant groupers etc.
